I’m Under 30 – Should I Use Anti-Aging Creams?

That was easy! But in all seriousness this is a question that lots of people find confusing, and a conversation I have heard being had amongst various groups of twenty-something women. I have been using anti-aging products since my early twenties. I have really dry skin, so I started young mainly because the standard day creams simply weren’t thick enough for me and if I missed one evening of my skincare routine, I would experience the unattractive flakey forehead I am constantly trying to avoid. But aside from my personal skin diagnosis, every skin type can benefit both instantly and in the long-run from using anti-aging products so early on. Obviously there can be no harm in using them in any event right? So why do people resist. Excuses I have heard include not realising young people need to – why would they? - and not wanting the hassle of adding another product to their skincare routine. In this article I explain how easy it is to start using anti-aging products and how it has worked for me.

Changing the Routine

Adding another product to your skincare routine can be a hassle, especially for those who like/want their lazy-girl habits and find that it works for them. I have been encouraged to have a formal skincare routine since my teens. Originally, this involved cleansing, toning and moisturising, using simple, straightforward products without any specific allegiance to one skin type or another. Into my early twenties this stopped working and I had to use products that were specifically aimed at dry skin. I started double cleansing twice a day, but if I missed one skincare session (think waking up on a Sunday morning with full face of make-up intact) I felt like I was back at square one. I managed to keep the flakey forehead at bay, but I wasn’t achieving the dewy glow that I think represents skin health. I first swapped my toner, using an anti-aging product in place of my usual. This worked in exactly the same way as my usual toner and so it fitted in easily - I simply replaced the product. I then changed my moisturiser to a thicker cream that I could wear day and night, with an SPF. Again, replacing the product meant there was no change to my routine. I use the same cleanser I always have – which isn’t anti-aging – and the products work together perfectly. In the last year, as I have edged closer to the big 3-0, I have added a retinol product in the evenings which I apply instead of my moisturiser, so again no additional hassle, which really targets and prevents the increase of lines. Finally, I now use a repairing oil as part of my morning routine, which I pat onto my face before applying moisturiser. Ok, I know this is an extra step, but the dewy glow I have been desperate for now comes naturally. I honestly feel as though my skin has never looked better, all with the benefit of keeping my skin looking younger for longer.

Feeling Different

For women of any age using amazing skincare and preventing or decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and lines is all about looking and feeling our best. As I have grown through my twenties, notably alongside the growth of social media, I have felt envy at the youthful looks of popstars and models. I took a trip to a Mac make-up store and requested every product under the sun to get that glow, get rid of the bags and generally make me look Instagram-perfect. But it still didn’t work. I got much, much closer, but actually the increase in skincare product use is really what’s changed my look. It has also made me feel more confident, not having to rely on layers of make-up to look healthy, and feeling generally natural in my own skin. So the thought of getting in from work, making dinner, doing the washing and then washing your face may seem impossible, but the positives outweigh the negatives without a doubt.
