Babymoon's - Yes or No?

Updated: Jan 17

You either know about babymoon's or you don’t. Some people have asked me if we are taking one and some people when I bring up the word look at me blankly but for those not in the know here’s a handy definition for you.

Babymoon noun informal a relaxing or romantic holiday taken by parents-to-be before their baby is born.

Right from the moment we were pregnant I’ve been thinking about where we are going to go. Where do I want the last place that just the two of us visit before we become a three. It can’t be too hot or too cold, and it can’t be too far. Price is also a factor as we’re trying desperately to save every penny before I go on Maternity.

It quickly dawned on me that given our personal circumstances (money, time, etc) it would have to be in the UK, it could only be over a weekend and it would probably cost just as much as flying somewhere.

I kind of let the idea go and decided that I didn’t need a babymoon anyway, I could just save the money and maybe have a nice meal out instead or something similar.Perhaps I could do some of the things round London that I’ve been putting off that definitely won’t be done once the baby is here.

Then I had a thought..... (I know, don’t think too hard etc etc. )

I have been desperate to go back to Portugal because it’s my home away from home and we haven’t been in four years. Financially we couldn’t do a Babymoon and Portugal but wouldn’t it be nicer to just go abroad instead, our first holiday as a family. Instead of spending a couple of hundred quid toodling down to Cornwall, with just the two of us and a giant belly where I’d probably be exhausted, why not book flights instead and take baby on it's first holiday.

Granted doing it this way I will still be exhausted because, 4 month old, but at least I'd have my parents AND my grandparents (who will be meeting baby for the first time) to have some cuddles and let me sleep for twenty minutes.

So that's what we are doing! We've booked flights and a hire car for under £300 and we're heading off for a week in September. We are really lucky in that my grandparents live over there so we don't have to pay for accommodation but I feel like our money is better spent this way.

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to have our first holiday as a family and start creating those first memories together.

Let me know if you are planning on taking a Babymoon and where you're going if so, so I can live my life vicariously through you!
